WEST SIDE CYCLE IS ALL ABOUT...

      ...SERVICE AND EDUCATION

A knowledgeable cyclist can get the most out of his or her bicycle, safely. Talk to William; send him an email. He’ll respond quickly.

William is particularly concerned that children, and parents, learn the right answers early on, so they can form great and long-lasting habits.

Some Quick Tips to Remember:

  •  Your bicycle is a vehicle—respect other vehicles on the road.
  •  Obey the rules of the road—obey road signs and stop at red lights.
  •  Ride in a straight line on the right hand side of the road.
  •  Look straight ahead when riding; anticipate danger.
  •  Ride in the same direction as traffic, usually one metre from the curb or from parked cars.
  •  Always signal properly, look both ways, and do a shoulder check before turning or moving out from a stopped position.
  •  Stay relaxed but keep pedalling.
  •  Wear your helmet every time you ride. It’s the law for those under eighteen years of age. Change your helmet every two to three years. Fifty dollars is a small investment for your head.
  •  Also required by law: reflector tape, a horn or bell, and lights and reflectors.
  •  Use a rack or basket, a water bottle and cage, and footwear that protects your toes.
  •  Buy a bike that fits you.
  •  Always check your bike before you ride: tires, brakes, handlebars, chain and crank, and your wheels’ quick release.
